Australia take home the 7th Annual ANZAC Cup

There’s another traditional ANZAC Day football match that takes place just slightly north of the MCG, in the small but incredibly beautiful town of Villers-Bretonneux, France.

This year’s Slater + Gordon ANZAC Cup saw Australia take out the win 112-63 making the tally 4 victories to Australia and 3 to France. What the tally doesn’t show you is the incredible relationships that are formed over the short few days between all involved. With both the Australian and French players and their guests being hosted by local families throughout the Picardie region, it has truly cemented this unique bond.

7e ANZAC CUP : le football australien à l’honneur

A l’occasion des « Rencontres australiennes » organisées à Villers-Bretonneux (80), un match de football australien, à travers l’ANZAC Cup, est organisé chaque année. Par le biais de sa commission nationale de football australien, l’UNSLL est partenaire de l’événement.

Depuis plusieurs années, la commune de Villers-Bretonneux organise autour du 25 avril «Les Journées Australiennes» : une semaine d’animations, d’échanges et de découverte autour de la culture australienne. Cet hommage rendu à l’Australie au cœur de la Somme puise ses racines dans la grande histoire. Lors de la première guerre mondiale, le village de Villers-Bretonneux avait en effet été libéré par des troupes australiennes.

Australia, France unite to play seventh annual ANZAC Cup in Villers-Bretonneux

HOURS after Essendon and Collingwood unite at the MCG to honour ANZAC DAY there will be another group of footballers lacing up their boots on the other side of the world.

This weekend the seventh annual Slater and Gordon ANZAC Cup will be staged in Villers-Bretonneux between amateur sides representing Australia and France.

The Slater + Gordon ANZAC Cup 2015

This weekend will see the 7th annual ANZAC Cup take place in Villers-Bretonneux in France, this Saturday 25th April at 12pm at Stade Timmerman.

The Australian team, coming from all around Europe as well as Australia, will take on the French team led by Andrew Unsworth and Stevo Ryan. Both teams will attend the Dawn Service at the Australian National Memorial, followed by a march, undertaken by both teams, through Villers-Bretonneux to Stade Timmerman, making the event even more special.
